Corralejo is a town in the municipality of La Oliva of the Spanish Canary Island of Fuerteventura and is about 40 kilometers north of the airport on the northern tip of the island.

History

Situated opposite the island of Lobos, Corralejo was a pirate and smuggler's haven in the 17th century. Taxes and duties on imports of food ( goats, grain, cheese) were circumvented by smuggling. The island's government was then in La Oliva, far enough to be powerless against this business.

From the 50s there was land sales to foreign tourism companies ( Belgian, Dutch and German ), apartment complexes and hotels emerged.

Mid-70s, two grand building ( RIU Tres Islas and Riu Oliva Beach ) originated south of Corralejo at the beginning of the dunes Parque Natural de Corralejo. After reclassification, the natural park were allowed no other hotel complexes south of the city buildings to be built.

Today is Corralejo, particularly favored by the regular ferry ( Fred. Olsen Express) after only a little more than 10 km away Playa Blanca on the neighboring island of Lanzarote ( day trips ), a vibrant resort. In this place increasingly focused the tourism industry of the northern part of the island.

Region

South of Corralejo extends the dune area of the national park to approximately 11 kilometers in length. Seaward limits the dunes to small and even long beaches of fine white sand. The beaches of Corralejo end up in the sea usually with stony ground. Beach lovers thus draws it to the beaches on the outskirts of the village. In the southwest of the city there are some well-preserved volcanic crater. The volcano Calderon Hondo is accessed via a partially paved trail.

Economy

The main industry is now tourism (such as hotels, apartment complexes, restaurants, travel companies ), which continues to grow. Agriculture is of minor importance and consists mainly of goat husbandry and dairy.
