Cotoneaster adpressus

Trellis - cotoneaster ( Cotoneaster adpressus )

The trellis - cotoneaster ( Cotoneaster adpressus ) is a reddish flowering shrub from the group of pome fruit crops ( Pyrinae ). The natural range of the species extends from western China to India and Myanmar. It is often used as an ornamental plant.

Description

The trellis - cotoneaster is a deciduous, more or less lying down, and rarely more than 25 inches high, breitwüchsiger shrub with reddish-brown, gray-brown or gray-black, initially strigelhaarigen and verkahlenden later, fächrig spread and arched, sloping branches. The leaves are divided into petiole and leaf blade. The stem is 1-2 mm long, glabrous or finely hairy. The stipules are subulate, nearly as long as the petiole and fall off early. The leaf blade is simple, broad - ovate or obovate, rarely oval, 5-15 mm long and 4-10 mm wide, entire and wavy, blunt to more or less pointed tip with wedge base. The upper leaf surface is dull green, glabrous with a sunken middle leaf vein, the underside is lighter, ciliate to glabrous with prominent medium leaf vein. The autumn color is dark burgundy.

The inflorescences consist of 1 to 2 almost seated flowers with a diameter of 7-8 millimeters. The flower cup is bell-shaped and hairy externally weak. The sepals are ovate- triangular, pointed and shorter than the petals. The petals stand upright. They are pink, obovate, 4-5 mm long and very nearly as wide, with a blunt tip or ausgerandeter. The ten to 15 stamens are shorter than the petals. The apex of the ovary is hairy. The detached, double pen stand not on the stamens also. The fruits have a diameter 7-9 mm. They are bright red, plump and bald. The fruit of two, rarely three nuclei are formed. The trellis - cotoneaster flowers from May to June and the fruits ripen from August to September.

The chromosome number is 2n = 68

Occurrence and habitat requirements

The natural range extends from the Chinese provinces of Gansu, Guizhou, Hubei, Qinghai, Shaanxi, Sichuan, Xizang and Yunnan to in tropical regions in India, Nepal and Myanmar. The trellis - cotoneaster grows in mountain forests, alpine areas, hedges and shrub areas in 1900-4000 meters on moderately dry to moderately moist, mildly acidic to strongly alkaline, sandy- gravelly loamy, rocky and shallow soil, nutrient-rich soils on sunny summer hot until summer cool and winter cold locations. The species is thermophilic and usually frost hardy.

System

The trellis - cotoneaster ( Cotoneaster adpressus ) is a species in the genus Zwergmispeln ( Cotoneaster ). It is assigned in the rose family ( Rosaceae ) of the subfamily Spiraeoideae, Tribe Pyreae the subtribes of pome fruit crops ( Pyrinae ). The species was described in 1904 by Georges Jean Marie Désiré Bois as Cotoneaster adpressa first time scientifically. The genus name Cotoneaster is derived from the Latin " malum cotoneum " for the quince ( Cydonia oblonga ). The ending " aster " is a Vergröberungsform for groups of plants that are considered in comparison with similar groups as inferior. The specific epithet adpressus also comes from Latin and means " pressed ", which points to the prostrate growth.

Use

The trellis - cotoneaster is often used because of their remarkable fruit and striking autumn color as an ornamental plant.
