Franchets cotoneaster ( Cotoneaster franchetii ) is about 2 meters tall shrub with orange-red fruits from the group of pome fruit crops ( Pyrinae ). The natural range of the species is in China, Myanmar and Thailand, Africa, America, Australia and Europe, it has run wild. It is often used as an ornamental plant.

Description

Franchets Cotoneaster is an evergreen or evergreen, 1-3 m tall shrub with arching, dark gray-brown or gray-black, initially densely hairy striegelig and later verkahlenden branches. The leaves are divided into petiole and leaf blade. The petiole is hairy 2 to 4 millimeters long and tomentose. The stipules are linear - lanceolate, 2-4 mm long, hairy tomentose at first and later glabrous. The leaf blade is simple, oval to ovate, 2 to 3 inches long and 1 to 1.5 inches wide, with pointed or tapered tip with wedge base. The upper leaf surface is matte and finely wrinkled, hairy at first pressed and later glabrous with deeply denkten leaf veins; the underside is densely yellowish to silbrigfilzig hairy with prominent veins.

The flowers grow in 1.5 to 2.5 centimeters in diameter umbrella- end from 5 to 11 flowers with densely tomentose hairy inflorescence stem. The bracts are linear, hairy 2 to 3.5 millimeters long and tomentose. The flower stalks are also hairy tomentose and 2 to 4 millimeters long. The flowers have a diameter 6-7 mm. The flower cup is bell-shaped and hairy outside densely downy. The sepals are triangular, acute or short acuminate, 1-2 mm long and 1.5 to 2.5 millimeters wide. The petals are erect, pink, broadly obovate or oval, 3-4 mm long and 2-3 mm wide, with a blunt tip and just nailed basis. The top is finely hairy at the base. The 20 stamens are shorter than the petals. The tip of the ovary is hairy fluffy. The two or three times to five free-standing style shorter than the stamens. The fruits have a diameter 6-7 mm. You are orange or red, ovate - roundish, hairy at first and later glabrous. The fruit up to five nuclei are formed mostly three rare. Franchets cotoneaster flowers in June and July, the fruits ripen from September to October.

Occurrence and habitat requirements

The natural range is located in the Chinese provinces of Guizhou, Sichuan, Xizang and Yunnan, Myanmar and Thailand. In South Africa, Australia and New Zealand, Europe and California, she has run wild. Franchets cotoneaster grows in steppes and dry forests in 1600-2900 meters on moderately dry to moderately moist, slightly acidic to alkaline, sandy- loamy to loamy, fertile soil in light to partial shade. The species is frost hardy and moderately warm temperatures.

The species was described in 1902 by Georges Jean Marie Désiré Bois first time scientifically. The genus name Cotoneaster is derived from the Latin " malum cotoneum " for the quince ( Cydonia oblonga ). The ending " aster " is a Vergröberungsform for groups of plants that are considered in comparison with similar groups as inferior. The specific epithet refers to the franchetii French botanist Adrien René Franchet.
