Counties of Romania
Currently, Romania is in 41 counties (Romanian Judet, plural judeţe, Judeţul with suffixed article, The Circle ') and a divided city.
The administrative divisions in Judeţe was made in the 19th century after the model of the French départements. The Communist government changed it in the Soviet model, but went back in 1968 to the current system. In 1981, the counties of Ilfov and Ialomiţa were reorganized into the circles Giurgiu, Calarasi, Ialomiţa and Ilfov. Until 1997 Ilfov was not an independent circle, but from Bucharest dependent.
