County of Empúries

The county Empúries, in Catalan Comtat d' Roses ( in Spanish also called Ampurias ) was one of the historic " Catalan counties ", which established the Franks in the Spanish market. Their territory corresponded largely to the present-day region Peralada around the city Empúries. It corresponds to the northern part of the historical comarca Empordà.

After Franks had conquered the region 785, and Empúries Peralada came under the rule of the Counts of Girona. To 813 was Roses ( with Peralada ) was a separate county, the first Earl Ermangar here. He and his immediate successors were probably Visigoths. 817 Empúries was combined with the county Rosselló, to which it then belonged mostly to 989.

989 were divided again Roussillon and Empuries, the Graf dynasty ruled until 1325, when Count Hug VI. the County to Count Peter IV of Ribagorça against the barony Pego and the two cities Xaló and Laguar, all in the Kingdom of Valencia, exchanged. Peter IV exchanged Empúries 1341 again against Prades. Since then Empúries was an appanage of the Crown of Aragon.
