County of Loon

The county of Loon (sometimes Loen or Looz in francophone countries ) is a former county, which corresponds roughly to the present-day Belgian province of Limburg, with the exception of the cities of Tongeren and Sint -Truiden. It included the towns of Beringen, Blizen Loon, Bree, Hamont, Hasselt, Herk- de -Stad, Maaseik, Peer and Stokkem.

History

The county of Loon was first mentioned in the year 1000 and was probably made from the remains of the Carolingian county Haspengauw. Founder of the county was Otto Graf in the Betuwe or his son Giselbert. Their descendant of Count Gerhard II had in 1190 the supremacy of the bishopric of Liège and recognize the Bishop as heirs in the event that no male offspring were present.

By 1200, the residence of the counts was moved to Hasselt. 1227 Count Arnold IV inherited by his marriage with Jeanne de Chiny out of the house Chiny Chiny the county. 1336 went out the house Loon with the death of Count Louis IV. His nephew Dietrich von Heinberg, the brother of the Bishop of Liège Adolf von der Mark, the inheritance could begin, as the bishop renounced the claim. Godfrey of Heinberg, Lord of Dalenbroeck and Dietrich's nephew, inherited Loon 1361, but had to give way to the Loon in 1362 took up the new bishop Engelbert of the Mark. Gottfried sold his rights to Loon to his cousin Arnold of Rümmingen ( Arnoul de Rumigny ), which tried in vain to conquer the county, and in 1366 finally declared his resignation. The Prince-Bishop of Liège now assumed the title of Count of Loon, giving priority to pass the institutions of the county and the county had a degree of autonomy, an injunction, which was confirmed in 1522.

After the battle of Fleurus (1794 ) and the French occupation of the left bank of the Rhine was Loon integrated into the Meuse - Inférieure.
