Coupe des Nations

The Coupe des Nations 1930 ( official name: Tournoi International de Football ), and Le Tournoi des Nations (English: Nations Cup ) was a football tournament in the summer of 1930 in Geneva, Switzerland, organized by the local club Servette Geneva. The frequently used term Cup of Nations is misleading because no national teams, but only clubs took part in the competition. Servette had just won the Swiss football championship, organized the tournament as an alternative to the World Cup in 1930, which was attended by only a few European countries (Belgium, France, Yugoslavia and Romania). At the same time the tournament part of the opening ceremonies of the Stade des Charmilles was in all 15 meetings were held.

The tournament is considered partly as a forerunner competition of the European Champions' Cup, as it was the first organized tournament with national title winners from Europe in addition to the Mitropa Cup. The master of all major European football nations were invited. One exception was the British countries, as these were excluded at the time of the FIFA.

Winner of the tournament was the Hungarian club Újpest Budapest, who won all four games and scored 16 goals in these and only one conceded. After winning the Coupe des Nations, the players of FC Újpest gave himself the nickname Champions of the Champions.

In the following years, several attempts have been made to organize a regular tournament for the national champion. North Italian towns had originally planned to host the tournament in 1931, this plan failed, however, because of financial reasons. During the World Exhibition in Paris in 1937, the first episode tournament was, but only two of the invited teams accepted the invitation. The European Champion teams met after 1930, except for the Mitropa Cup and the Coupe Latine, only in 1955 that another, as the UEFA Founded in 1954, called the European Champion Clubs' Cup in life.
