Crespin Abbey

The former monastery Crespin in the northern French community Crespin in Nord was probably founded around the year 670 by the later canonized Landelin of Crespin († 686 ), who was also his first abbot, and died there.

Foundation

Landelin, a former highwayman of high nobles descent who evangelized after his conversion in the northern Frankish Empire had previously founded the abbeys in Lobbes ( 650 ) Alder ( 656) and Waller ( Waslere ) ( 657 ). According to tradition, he later moved with two students in the forest in Hainaut between Valenciennes and Mons, where he built a wooden cell on the banks of the groves, which opens at Condé- sur- l'Escaut in the Scheldt. When the owner of the forest wanted to take as a prize for the unauthorized Cutting branches off them their clothes, he was paralyzed; after publication of the clothes he was cured of Landelin again. Landelin his first dept was He died there, probably in the year 686, and was buried in the monastery church.

History

Today's state

From the well was built around 673 abbey church remains are still today only. From the rest of the monastery only are the former house of the abbot, in which are for rent today, and get some outbuildings.
