Cristina Deutekom

Cristina Deutekom ( born August 28, 1931 in Amsterdam as Christine Engel) is a Dutch opera, oratorio and concert singer ( dramatic coloratura soprano). In Venice it was known as the Dutch nightingale ( " Usignolo olandese ").

Career

After some minor roles she had her breakthrough in 1963 when she sang the role of The Magic Flute Queen of the Night in Mozart. She then sang the same role in all the major opera houses of Europe and at the Metropolitan Opera in 1968.

It opened in 1974 season at the Met as Elena in Verdi's I vespri sicilani on the side of tenor Plácido Domingo.

In addition to the queen of the night included her Mozart roles of Donna Anna ( Don Giovanni), Fiordiligi ( Così fan tutte ) and Vitellia (La Clemenza di Tito ). Your bel canto roles included Gioachino Rossini ( Armida ), Vincenzo Bellini ( Norma, I Puritani ) and Gaetano Donizetti ( Lucia di Lammermoor ). She sang the dramatic Verdi roles such as Abigale in Nabucco, Lady Macbeth, Leonora in Il trovatore, Amelia in Un ballo in maschera, Elena in I vespri siciliani as well as the recordings of the Giselda in I Lombardi and Odabella in Attila. She also sang the title roles in Puccini's Turandot.

She sang with all the leading tenors of their time: Franco Corelli, Luciano Pavarotti Plácido Domingo, Josep Carreras, Alfredo Kraus, Carlo Bergonzi and Nicolai Gedda.

Her career ended in 1987, when she suffered a heart attack. After her playing career she gave international master classes. So it was in 2001 Gastdozentinin at the Royal Conservatory in The Hague. After a stroke in 2004, she retired from the public.
