Cryptocheilus is a genus of Wegwespen ( Pompilidae ). In Europe, 24 species occur, which are distributed mainly in the Mediterranean.
Features
The medium to large Wegwespen are colored flashy. Head and thorax are finely structured punctiform. The convex front plate ( clypeus ) is short and broad and the apical edge is concave. The head capsule and face are covered with short, shiny, adjacent hairs. The labrum is partially obscured by the head capsule. The mandibles are powerful and have in most species an additional tooth. The third segment of the Maxillarpalpen is widened at the top. The tag ( scutellum ) carries at least two upright bristles at the apical region. The propodeum is increasingly curved backwards. On the wing tips of the forewings is a brownish band. The small Flügelmal ( pterostigma ) has about the same length as the wing vein 2rs -m. The legs have short spurs, also scale-like denticles are located in the females at the dorsal edge of the rails ( tibia ). The tarsi of the front legs missing Tarsalkämme. In females, the second sternum is provided with an inclined indentation, the sixth sternum is more or less rounded. The sixth Tergum at the top has nearly erect hairs. In the males, the visible part of subgenital plate is almost flat and slightly in some species folded lengthwise.
Way of life
The wasps inhabit open habitats and forest edges. The females lay their multicellular nests in existing and further developed cavities in the ground. The excavation work is carried out before the hunt, where each cell has its own entrance. The brood is supplied with spiders from the families Agelenidae, Amaurobiidae, Araneidae, Dysderidae, Gnaphosidae, Heteropodidae, Lycosidae, Miturgidae, Pisauridae, Salticidae and Thomisidae.
