Crystal Castles (2008 album)

Occupation

Crystal Castles is the self-titled debut album of the Canadian electric duo Crystal Castles. It was published on 18 March 2008 on Lies Records.

Content

The album is a compilation of previous sold-out singles the band early unreleased tracks and three newly recorded specifically for the album productions. The album fluctuates between aggressive Electro Punk - pieces ( " Alice Practice ", " Xxzxcuzx Me" ), smoother electric pieces ( " Untrust Us", " Magic Spells ", " Vanished" ) and a swivel in the shoegaze / dream pop genre with " Tell Me What to Swallow ".

In the track " Alice Practice " is an improvised microphone test, which so pleased the label that he was ( unbeknownst to Alice Glass ) done on the album.

Artwork

The actual cover, which should adorn the album, presented a Madonna - Photo by Trevor Brown; however, its label distributors in the U.S. refused to sell an album with a Madonnna - face and without any content of Madonna. Brown, the photographer, was also presented against the use of the photograph. So finally a photo of the two band members, as they stooped was standing in front of a garage, taken as a simple artwork.

Reviews

The album was well received by critics all in all. So Pitchfork Media praised the one hand the vitality of the band, but also that the unpredictability is a key element in the plate. The site awarded 7.8 / 10 points on the album.

Harald Jakobs awards at Plattentests.de 7/10 points and writes:

" A good, rather slowly dancing album that savors the pain of a little robot soul to the fullest is to" Crystal Castles " but despite the debate about the integrity of the band. The rest is maybe just their understanding of punk ethics. "
