Kumbrisch is a Celtic language that was spoken about in the 11th century in a large part of Cumbria, northern Northumbria and the Scottish Central Lowlands up. Although traces of the Cumbrian received mainly in place names, the language is extinct.

There are few sources by which the proximity or distance to the Welsh could determine exactly. Until the early 20th century were relics of the Cumbrian number system in use when shepherds counted their sheep. In this common for the numbers 1-20 mocked forms of Cumbrian numbers used ( Yan Tan Tethera ). The following table lists the Cumbrian numbers and their Welsh equivalents for the numbers from 1 through 10 are listed for comparison:

In addition to these numbers are merely receive some legal terms.

Kumbrisch was formerly sometimes referred to as North Welsh, Cornish as South Welsh. At least that Cornish is definitely not a Welsh dialect, since it belongs to the southwest Britannic Group and Breton is closer than the Welsh. At the time of their highest spread the Cumbrian language may have been spoken by about 30,000 people.

The greatest difficulty in Cumbrian is that it may not act at a distance to the old Welsh language and it is therefore doubtful whether one can meaningfully speak of an independent Cumbrian language. Alternatively, one could speak of a Cumbrian dialect of old Welsh.
