Curlin ( born March 25, 2004 in Kentucky) is an American Thoroughbred horse. With a total of over U.S. $ 10 million, it is the North American racehorse, which achieved the highest ever prize money. Among his greatest victories include the 2007 Preakness Stakes, the Breeders' Cup Classic in 2007 and the Dubai World Cup 2008.

Curlins father is Smart Strike, a half-brother of Dance Smartly, the Canadian Triple Crown winner in 1991. Curlins mother is Sherriff 's Deputy, a daughter of Deputy Minister.

The foal was named after Charles Curlin, a black slaves from Western Kentucky who fought in the American Civil War. One of the original owners of the foal, Shirley Cunningham, is Charles Curlins great-granddaughter.

Timeform Publications, belonging to Betfair, Curlin designated in August 2008 as the world's best horse on the sand track.

2007: Three-year

As a two year old Curlin is not started. As a three year old Curlin was trained by Helen Pitts. In February 2007, he won a seven- furlong long race for three year olds with 12 ¾ horse lengths ahead in Gulfstream Park in Florida.

Curlin was 1:1 favorite in the Belmont Stakes in 2007. He delivered himself with the mare Rags to Riches a long head-to -head race, losing by a head length. Rags to Riches was for a hundred years, the first mare, who won the Belmont Stakes.

On October 27, 2007 Curlin started in Breeders' Cup Classic at the Monmouth Park Racetrack in Oceanport, New Jersey. The turf was, after several days of rain. In a field of nine horses Curlin won ahead of his competitors Hard Spun with 4 ¾ lengths. Curlin ran the 1 1/4 miles in 2:00:59, which is at a low turf a fast time. The track record is 2:00:40 and comes from carryback from the year 1962.

2007 Curlin was named American Horse of the Year.

2008: Four-year

2008 Curlin launched in Dubai at the Meydan Racecourse in the Group I Dubai World Cup races, the most valuable horse race in the world.
