Cyriel Buysse

Cyriel Buysse ( born September 20, 1859 in Nevele, † July 25, 1932 in Afsnee ) was a Flemish -writing, naturalistic Belgian writer. He also wrote under the following pseudonyms: Louis Bonheyden, Prosper Van Hove and Robert Palmer.

Life

Cyriel Buysse was born in 1859 in Nevele ( East Flanders ), the son of a wealthy family. Before he had completed his studies at the Atheneum in Ghent, he stepped on his father's wish in the acting with endive family.

At the suggestion of his aunt Virginie Loveling Following that was a writer himself, he began to write at the age of 26 years. When his father discovered that he had met with a young woman he had met at a local café, he had to leave the parental environment. Between 1886 and 1896 he traveled several times to the United States, but returned disappointed from time to time back. The report of his travels was published under the name of Twee Herinneringen uit America ( Two memories from America ), which he wrote in 1888.

Buysse became famous as a naturalist writer in the tradition of Stijn Streuvels, Émile Zola and Guy de Maupassant. Although Buysse was educated in French, which was not uncommon for the sons of wealthy Flemish family at that time, he wrote most of his works in Dutch. His style is characterized by a deep sympathy for the people, whose existence he describes in vivid and realistic manner.

In 1893 he founded together with Prosper Van Langendonck, August Vermeylen and Emmanuel de Bom the literary journal Van Nu en Straks ( From Today and Tomorrow ), which, however, he shortly afterwards left as a result of a quarrel. In the same year he wrote his first novel Het right van den sterkste ( The right of the fittest ).

In 1896 he married the Dutch widow Nelly Dyserinck. The winter he spent in The Hague ( Netherlands), where in 1897 his son René Cyriel came into the world; he spent the summer on his rural property in Afsnee (Belgium ).

In 1903 he founded, together with Louis Couperus and Willem Gerard van Nouhuys the literary magazine " Groot Nederland ", which he edited until his death.

During the German occupation of Belgium during the First World War Buysse remained in the Netherlands, where he wrote, among other contributions for the magazine De Vlamse Stem ( The Flemish voice ). After the armistice in 1918 he returned to Belgium, where his writing talent was now very recognized: In 1921, he received the Driejaarlijkse Staatsprijs voor het voor Proza and 1930 in the Royal Flemish Academy Taal -en Letterkunde added. In 1932, he was raised by the Belgian King Albert I in a baron, a rare honor for a writer and in view of the style and content of his works, not without irony.

His naturalistic piece Het gezin Paemel van ( The van Paemel Family, 1902) is still performed regularly. 1986 piece by Paul Cammermans was filmed.

Cyriel Buysse died on 25 July 1932 in Afsnee.
