Dalmacio Vélez Sársfield

Dalmacio Velez Sarsfield ( born February 18, 1800 Amboy, † November 30, 1875 in Buenos Aires ) was an Argentine lawyer and politician, who wrote the " Código Civil de la República Argentina" ( Civil Code of Argentina) from 1869. The bulk of this law is still in force today.

Life

Velez Sarsfield was born in the small town of Amboy in the department Calamuchita. His parents were Dalmacio Vélez Sarsfield Baigorri and Rosa Palacios. He studied at " Colegio Nacional Nuestra Señora de Monserrat " in Cordoba ( Argentina), who among other things, Nicolás Avellaneda and José Figueroa Alcorta made ​​where their training.

At 22 he received his degree. He moved to Buenos Aires and married Paula Piñero. He aspired to a political career and was elected as a deputy in the " Cámara de Deputies de la Nación Argentina", 3 years later, he became Speaker of the House, at the time the youngest ever holder of this position. 1826 Velez Sarsfield became Professor of Political Economy at the Faculty of Law, University of Buenos Aires.

The seizure of power by Juan Manuel de Rosas prepared his career, a temporary end. He left Buenos Aires and first moved to Cordoba, later he went into exile in Montevideo ( Uruguay). There he worked as a legal expert in the field of canon law and wrote the " Tratado en Público eclesiástico Relación al Estado ".

After the fall of de Rosas, he returned to politics. In 1858 he co-authored with Eduardo Acevedo, a commercial code for the (then ) State of Buenos Aires. After the national reunification in 1862 he was awarded the work order for a Civil Code ( Código Civil). Work on it began in 1864, however, under the presidency of Bartolomé Mitre, 1869 it was completed.

Throughout his life he was several times Minister of Justice of Argentina. He was also the founder of the newspaper " El Nacional ", along with Mitre.

He died in Buenos Aires in 1874, at the age of 75 years. His grave is in the cemetery of La Recoleta. According to him, the district Velez Sarsfield in Buenos Aires was named. In addition, his birthplace is a museum in memory of him.
