Daniel Nimham

Daniel Nimham (* 1724, † August 31, 1778 ) was a chief of the tribe of the Wappinger. They lived to 1760 east of the Hudson River about 80 to 180 km north of the present-day New York City in the Hudson Valley. In the French and Indian War (French and Indian War ) ( 1754-1763 ) fought Nimham on the side of the British. During his absence, the tribe was forced into the near Stockbridge, Massachusetts to relocate. After his return Nimham complained unsuccessfully against the expulsion, for which he even went to England.

Nimham returned from Massachusetts to the American War of Independence back to the Hudson Valley. With his son Abraham Nimham he now fought against the Imperial State Crown crown. He died along with his son and 40 other tribe members in an attack in today's Van Cortland, New York on August 31, 1778.

A mountain in Putnam County, New York, is named after him and the places and Wappinger Wappingers Falls to his tribe. Nimham was possibly a model or example in the novels Leatherstocking Series by James Fenimore Cooper ( 1789-1851 ).
