Dannevirke

Dannevirke is a settlement in the Wairarapa near the east coast of New Zealand's North Island. It is the capital of the Tararua District, the easternmost district of the Manawatu- Wanganui Region. The village had 2006 5.517 inhabitants in the census.

Dannevirke was founded in 1872 by the Danish, Norwegian and Swedish immigrants. This ran at the port of Napier, to then continue to draw inland. Named the place was named after the Danish border wall Danewerk Schleswig.

Soon after, the place was nicknamed " Sleeper Town " (Eng. " railway sleepers City " ) because of the environment of Dannevirke came the wooden railway sleepers for the construction of the railway line Wellington Napier. At times, in Dannevirke up to 50 sawmills in operation. After the clearing of forests (mainly Totara trees), the area was converted into extensive pasture.
