Dave Godin

David Edward Godin ( born June 21, 1936 in Lambeth, London, † 15 October 2004 in Rotherham, Yorkshire ) was an English soul singer and music journalist.

Biography

David Godin was born in 1936 as son of a milkman in Lambeth in England. He spent his early childhood in Peckham, to its family during World War II by a bomb attack on a move to Bexleyheath in the former county of Kent (now Greater London) was forced.

There he received a scholarship to Dartford Grammar School, where he met the younger Mick Jagger, whom he encouraged in his interest in the American rhythm and blues. Even at the first meetings, which later became the band Rolling Stones emerged, he was involved.

Later he accused Jagger that this with his band the Black music exploited for their own purposes and ended the formerly friendly relationship with the at that time already famous Mick Jagger.

Already during his school years began Godin plates of American rhythm and blues to collect what at that time posed no easy task, as appropriate pieces sold in the UK, were still broadcast on the radio. After leaving school, he worked in the short term at an advertising agency and toured the United States, where he indulged his passion for music. After his return, he refused military service in his home and did two years as a hospital porter his alternative service.

After Godin was not satisfied with the approach of Oriole, he took direct contact with Motown on at their headquarters in Detroit, after which he was invited there by the founder of Berry Gordy. From there he returned with a consulting agreement the company Motown and caused increased presence of music he represents the direction in broadcasting and for the acquisition of marketing rights by EMI.

After the slow separation of Motown Godin opened in Deptford (later based in Covent Garden) the Soul City record shop and started for the magazine "Blues & Soul" to write, where he quickly became the influential authors. He then took again a great influence on the soul scene by coined the term " Northern Soul ," who supposedly goes back to a special department in his business, which he put after certain of its customers from the northern UK musical to recognize the preferences believed. Whenever he had a client from the north, he referred it to his collection of "Northern Soul" and the term is said to have become so common.

In 1971 when his business and the ensuing label " Soul City " and "Deep Soul" were bankrupt, Godin left London and moved to Lincolnshire and later, in 1978 to Sheffield. In Sheffield Polytechnic, he enrolled for a course in art history, design and film and received the corresponding degree. This led to the founding of the " Anvil Film Theatre ".

Godin, who fed on vegetarian since his youth, began against the mistreatment of animals in the film industry going and strongly advocated for the freedom of the film medium and against any kind of censorship in this field.
