David Daniell (author)
David Daniell ( born February 17, 1929) is an English author and editor of books, mainly about William Tyndale and his translation of the Bible.
Life
He was educated at Queen Elizabeth Grammar School in Darlington. He later studied at St. Catherine 's College, Oxford. 1952 he received his Bachelor of Arts in 1954 and his Master of Arts in English Literature. In 1954 he made additionally his Bachelor of Arts in the field of theology and finished in 1955 to study at the University of Tübingen. In 1972 he got for his Shakespearean studies his Ph.D. at the University of London. In 1979 he accompanied the Royal Shakespeare Company on their six -week tour of major European cities.
David Daniell published in 1980 and 1982, two volumes of short stories of the Scottish writer John Buchan. He published in 1989 William Tyndale's New Testament William Tyndale Old Testament and 1992.
David Daniell read English and later theology at Oxford. 1992 Daniell was appointed to the University of London as Professor of English Language. Since 1994 he is professor emeritus. He is an Honorary Research Fellow ( Honorary Fellow ) at Hertford College Oxford and at St. Catherine 's College, and he is an honorary member ( Honorary Member) of the "Senior Common Room 's" ( senior faculty room ) of Magdalen College.
In 1994 his biography of Tyndale. In January 1995, the Tyndale Society was at a meeting at the British Library founded and David Daniell was elected its first chairman. The chair took over later Mary Clow. Meanwhile, the Tyndale Society has more than a hundred members worldwide.
In 1998 he published an edition of Shakespeare Julius Caesar. His book on the history of the English Bible ( The Bible in English. History and Influence) appeared in 2003. David Daniell had more than 50 radio and television appearances in which he talked about his work.
David Daniell is married and has two sons.
Known theses
In his writings on William Tyndale, he represents some theses that are cited in publications by other authors.
- Tyndale was independent of Luther's Bible translation.
- Tyndale has taken over from Martin Luther's translation of the Bible, which he was for good.
- In the Matthew Bible William Tyndale's translation was reprinted from the book of Joshua to the second book of Chronicles. This thesis is not new, so already, for example, AS Herbert about the Matthew Bible said: " This version [ of the English Bible ], which puts together the best work of Tyndale and Coverdale, is the true original English Bible " and Sir Frederic G. Kenyon expressed in 1909 similar to David Daniell.
- About 80 percent (exact 83 percent) of the English New Testament ( in the King James Bible ) goes back to the William Tyndale's translation. He took over from John Nielson and Royal Skousen This hypothesis.
