David M. Rodriguez

David M. Rodriguez ( * in West Chester, Pennsylvania) is a general of the United States Army and is since 5 April 2013, the commander of United States Africa Command in Stuttgart. Previously, he was deputy from July to October 2009 Commander of United States Forces Afghanistan, as of 12 October 2009, he commanded the newly formed ISAF Joint Command ( IJC ) below the commander of ISAF.

Military career

Training and first uses

Rodriguez graduated in 1976, the U.S. Military Academy at West Point and received his commission as a Second Lieutenant. His first use in the 1st Battalion, 61st Infantry Regiment ( Mechanized), where he served as a platoon leader of the platoon, and later as Executive Officer ( XO ) of a company.

Service as a staff officer

In the late 1980s Rodriguez was used in the 82nd Airborne Division. Here he served as XO of the 1st Battalion, 505th U.S. Parachute Regiment, and was with the regiment in the operations Desert Shield and Desert Storm operations abroad. After further uses in 1997 he returned back to the U.S. 82nd Airborne Division and took over command of the 325th Airborne Regiment.

Service in the rank of general

After further uses Brigadier General Rodriguez served until 2005 as Deputy Director for Regional Operations ( J- 33) in the Joint Staff. A post he gave in February 2005 to Brigadier General Carter F. Ham, who had just returned from overseas deployment to Iraq, where he had the Multi- National Brigade North West commanded. Rodriguez, in turn, was promoted to Major General and took over in February 2005 in Iraq the newly created post of commander of Multi- National Division North West under the command of General George W. Casey, Jr.

He held this command held for one year. After returning from Iraq, he finally took over on April 7, 2006, the command of the 82nd Airborne Division at Fort Bragg, North Carolina, and led them to 21 July 2008. During this time he was with the Division once again deployed abroad, this time in Afghanistan, where he functioned as Regional commander East ( RC-E ) of the ISAF.

In August 2008, under appointment as Lieutenant -General taking over the post of Senior Military Assistant to the Secretary of Defense, which he served as the first military advisor to the U.S. Secretary of Defense Robert Gates.

In July 2009, Rodriguez finally took over in Afghanistan under the command of General Stanley A. McChrystal, the post of deputy commander of U.S. Forces Afghanistan. In addition, he should build and command a subordinate headquarters under the ISAF headquarters within the NATO command structure. It should be of a headquarters for the corps - level and deal with the " daily business " of the ISAF.
