Delta Phi

Delta Phi ( ΔΦ ) is a Fraternity founded in 1827 at Union College in Schenectady, New York. It is part of the Union Triad, and thus one of the oldest still existing fraternities of the United States and is next to Kappa Alpha and Sigma Phi, the third and last member of the Triad.

Background

Establishing time of the Union Triad, there were strong reservations about Masonic efforts in the United States. Originally organized as secret societies, student circles were also target of reservations. Among other things, Phi Beta Kappa is therefore organized as a secret society rather than vocational Honor Society. At the beginning of the 1830s to Eliphalet Nott, president of Union College began to work for the resolution of all fraternities. John Jay Hyde, a member of Delta Phi was able to stop him. Hyde designed the badge still worn in the form of a Maltese cross. The reference to the Order of Malta gave Delta Phi nicknamed The St. Elmo Club who first came up with the Omicron Chapter of Yale University.

This former Chapter of Delta Phi at Yale, which was founded in 1889 St. Elmo (connection) has split off and is now a separate classic by year of related secret society for advanced students, it is like Skull and Bones, Scroll and Key, Wolf 's Head, Book and Snake, Elihu, Berzelius ( connection ) and Mace and Chain to the ancient eight senior societies at Yale University.

Delta Phi Fraternity is the third oldest of the United States and sees himself as the longest continuously active compound in the United States.
