Democratic Movement (France)

The Mouvement démocrate ( MoDem; German Democratic Movement ) is a centrist - liberal political party in France, founded in May 2007 on the initiative of the politician François Bayrou.

Bayrou announced on 25 April 2007 after his good result in the 2007 presidential election, to want to inherit with the party establishment, the Union pour la démocratie française and to compete in the 2007 parliamentary elections. First, Bayrou had suggested the name Parti démocrate, but this was changed to Mouvement démocrate, because there is a little known Parti Démocrate in France.

Bayrou positioned the party as a combination of moderate left and moderate right and hoped to establish MoDem as alternative political force in France.
