Dennis Canavan

Dennis Canavan ( * 1942 in Cowdenbeath ) is a Scottish politician and former member of the Labour Party.

House of Commons

Canavan initially arose when the general election in October 1974 for the constituency of West Stirlingshire and won the direct mandate just before the candidate SNP. In the following elections in 1979, he defended his position. As part of the constituency reform 1983, the constituency of West Stirlingshire was dissolved. Canavan stepped from now on for the newly created constituency of Falkirk West. He won the constituency in the general election 1983und defended his mandate in the elections in 1987, 1992 and 1997.

Scottish Parliament

Although Canavan was an established politicians in his constituency, he was not placed in the Scottish Parliament elections in 1999 for his constituency Falkirk West. Then Canavan left the Labour Party and ran as a non-party candidate. He scored with a lead of about 12,200 votes against the candidate of the Labour Party the best relative performance of all the candidates and moved into the newly created Scottish Parliament. In the elections to the First Minister Canavan candidate 1999, 2000 and 2001 and each received three of the 123 votes. In the following 2003 parliamentary elections Canavan moved again masterfully by a margin of exactly 10,000 votes ahead of Michael Matheson of the SNP in the parliament. Likewise, he ran again in the elections to the First Minister and received two of a total of 127 votes. At the 2007 parliamentary elections Canavan no longer went to.

In 2010, his autobiography, Let the People Decide appeared.
