Dennis King

Dennis King ( born November 2, 1897 in Coventry, England as Dennis Pratt, † May 21, 1971 in New York City ) was a British-American stage and film actor and singer.

Life and career

After some successes in British theater stages Dennis King moved in 1921 to the USA. There, the handsome actor made ​​his Broadway debut in the same year. In the 1930s and 1940s he was one there to the big stars and won a primarily female followers. Most included his performances because of its good voice singing parts. He took one hand to in musicals, acted the other hand, with also in Shakespeare plays. His biggest success was the role of François Villon in Rudolf Friml's The Vagabond King piece from 1925. Until 1969 Dennis King appeared in at least 40 Broadway plays in which he has mainly played in lead roles.

In the film version of the play The King of the Vagabonds Dennis King gave his film debut in 1930, the film received an Academy Award nomination. Overall, he had about 30 film and television appearances until 1969. He joined, among others, as an elegant bandit Fra Diavolo on the side of Laurel and Hardy in the Comedy Hands up - or not. From 1950 he also starred in TV shows and TV movies.

Dennis King died at the age of 73 years. He was the father of Theaterschaupielers John Michael King (1926-2008)
