Derek Jacobi

Sir Derek George Jacobi KBE ( born October 22, 1938 in Leytonstone, London ) is a British actor.

Life and work

Jacobi is the only child of Daisy Gertrude, nee Masters and Alfred George Jacobi, who ran a candy store and worked in Chingford as a tobacconist. His great-grandfather had emigrated from Germany to England in the 19th century.

Jacobi was born in Leytonstone, East London, and studied for some time at Cambridge University, before he discovered his passion for acting. After the role of Edward II in Cambridge Jacobi in 1960 directly after graduating member of the Birmingham Repertory Theatre. Laurence Olivier was impressed by his abilities and cast him as Cassio in his 1965 film adaptation of Shakespeare's Othello. But the real breakthrough came in 1976 with I, Claudius, a highly acclaimed television adaptation of the bestseller of the author Robert Graves. In 1994 he was nominated for his many years of service to the British theater for Knight Commander of the British Empire.

Jacobi has appeared in many Shakespeare productions, including several film versions of Hamlet. It was founded in 1994 known to a wider television audience through the role of "Brother Cadfael " in the film adaptations of historical detective stories by Ellis Peters. 1995 Jacobi was together with Duncan Weldon artistic director of the Chichester Festival Theatre and played there in 1996 for the first time the role of Uncle Vanya by Anton Chekhov in the drama. In Ridley Scott's Gladiator ( 2000), he embodied the Senator Gracchus. After an Emmy for Supporting Actor in 1989 Jacobi played in his first guest role on American television in a 2001 episode of the television series Frasier the worst Shakespearean actor in the world. The prompt earned him an Emmy Award. In early 2006, Jacobi was in Len Wiseman's Underworld: Evolution can be seen as Alexander Corvinus, the granddaddy of all vampires and werewolves.

In the BBC webcast Doctor Who: Scream of the Shalka Derek Jacobi was heard as the master. In 2007 he played the Master in the television series Doctor Who, episode Utopia.

Derek Jacobi lives since 1977 with his partner Richard Clifford, 2006, she entered into a registered partnership.
