Derek Kevan

Derek Tennyson Kevan ( born March 6, 1935 in Ripon; † 4 January 2013) was an English footballer, who among other things, was active for West Bromwich Albion and Manchester City. Between 1957 and 1961 he played fourteen matches ( eight goals) for the England national team.

Playing career

West Bromwich Albion (1953-1963)

After beginning his career with the unterklassigen club Bradford Park Avenue Kevan moved in 1953 to the English first division side West Bromwich Albion. However, he made his debut for his new club until the beginning of the Football League First Division 1955/56. Therefore, he missed the success of his club in the FA Cup 1953/54, when Albion secured by a 3-2 final win over Preston North End the title. After two years in mid-table West Brom finished the season in 1957/58 as fourth. In the First Division 1961/62 the team reached to Bobby Robson and Kevan only the ninth in the standings, it is ensured thanks to Kevan thirty-three league matches together with Ray Crawford of Ipswich Town champion the title as the top scorer.

Manchester City (1963-1965)

After Kevan had been sold in March 1963 against his will to the second division side FC Chelsea, he joined in the summer of the same year to Manchester City. City was relegated in the previous season from the First Division in 1966 and managed to return to the first division. In the second division two years, drew Kevan (67 Spiele/48 goals) as a very unerring striker. After switching to Crystal Palace in the summer of 1965, the services of Kevan up to end of his career deteriorated significantly.

English national team (1957-1961)

Derek Kevan debuted in April 1957 in the England national team against Scotland and scored his first goal directly. As a result, he was called into the squad for the FIFA World Cup 1958 in Sweden. In the first game against the Soviet Union, he scored in the 66th minute the first goal, before Tom Finney scored the 2-2 draw. After serving in the second match against Brazil (0-0 ), he scored the 2-2 draw in the third match against Austria. England then lost the playoff against the Soviets 0-1 and had to return home. The 23 -year-old Kevan came in all four games for use and scoring two goals. Four years later he was called back into the squad for the World Cup in Chile in 1962, but did not play.
