The action takes place in a nursing home and focuses on the " nurse " Derek. Gervais ' inspiration for Derek came from relatives who work in nursing homes:

"Half my family are care workers. My sister works with kids with learning difficulties. My sister -in-law works in a care home for people with Alzheimer 's. And four or five of my nieces work in old people 's homes. I always write about what I know. "

Action

Gervais plays the 49 -year-old Derek Noakes, a nurse in a nursing home, who started there three years ago. He likes reality TV, game shows and is interested in celebrities, fame and YouTube. He's a nice, helpful, selfless man with good intentions. However, Derek is vulnerable because of his childlike naivety and his low intelligence. He is ridiculed, ostracized and marginalized by society because of his social awkwardness, ugliness and its social inhibitions. For Derek it's more important to be nice as smart or good-looking. Some media describe him as autistic, but Gervais was always on, that Derek is not mentally retarded.

Reviews

The series has been criticized, especially before the broadcast, because of their representation of the seemingly mentally challenged Derek. Tanya Gold in the Guardian pointed Gervais ' from statement that he prejudice against disabled people satirized in Derek. Instead, the series was Jack Seale of the Radio Times picked this up in his criticism back to " more of a slow cruelty as a satire. ": " [ Derek ] is unzynisch presented as a hero, which in Gervais ' words, ' better than us ' is because he lacks ego and deceit and he wants to be nice only. Those who want to find an attack by Gervais ' portrayal of Derek must be very looking. " Seale criticized the series, however, as it is too based on elements and characterizations of previous Gervais broadcasts. However, he praised the final emotional scene in the pilot as a " truly outstanding work by Gervais as an actor, writer and director ." In addition, Seale Kerry Godlimans praised performance: " " every moment in which it is to see is to sigh moving magic. " Sam Wollaston of The Guardian was also of the view that Derek is indisputable total but " not very good "and that the whole mockumentary thing now feels boring. " the pilot episode was seen by just under two million viewers, more than ten percent of the television audience at the time.
