Digitally Imported

Digitally Imported ( DI.FM also ) is an American Internet radio station that specializes in electronic music styles like Trance, Techno or House. At the same company include the sister stations SKY.FM who served beyond the spectrum of electronic music and JAZZRADIO.com which covers the world of jazz and blues.

History

Digitally Imported was founded to make on December 6, 1999 by Ari Shohat, the pursued the goal of trance and techno music imports from Europe to the American public via the Internet readily available. He would thus ensure the proliferation and acceptance of this genre in the United States. The program was initially sent over a 56kb connection and initially consisted of only a single channel, the Trance Channel. Soon this was, however, extended to more channels, sent the music related styles of Hard Trance and Euro Dance. The number of genres offered was constantly expanded, increased the available data bandwidth continuously. So DI.FM grew beside AccuRadio and Live365 to a market- leading web radio empire, which now covers almost the entire range of electronic music styles. In the meantime, listen to peak some 90,000 listeners the 50 stations, including those of its sister station SKY.FM.

Business

Although the company is profit oriented, they derived from the sale of advertising and audio streaming subscriptions not enough revenue to pay all expenses such as traffic and maintenance of the server. The transmitter is a company registered in New York State " Digitally Imported, Inc." Responsible CEO of DI.FM and SKY.FM is still the founder Ari Shohat.

Shipments

The most well-known broadcast on DI.FM is the weekly "A State Of Trance " by Armin van Buuren on the Trance Channel that is transmitted on many other radio stations worldwide. The senior show, however, is "Trance Formation" (formerly Trance -N -Motion in partnership with Tommaso De Donati ), presented by the German DJ Ciacomix working in the team of Digital Imported since 2000. Moreover, he was one of the first DJs DI.FM which played a live broadcast.

In principle, any DJ or producer with DI apply for the release of his productions, which then - be included in the track rotation - provided they meet the quality requirements.

An important, recurring highlight are live broadcasts from clubs or events at which additionally often a video stream is offered, which is like the pure audio stream can be received free of charge.

DI offers several channels, the free ( ad-supported ) can be heard.

For a monthly fee of between about 4 to 6 U.S. $ (depending on the minimum contract period ) the subscribers are additional bandwidth with higher audio quality available, where the commercial breaks attributable to:

  • 256 kbit / s MP3
  • 128 kbit / s AAC
  • 64 & 40 kbit / s HE- AAC

Technology

For the transmission of the programs, the MP3 format is used, which is streamed via a Shoutcast server. Meanwhile, the programs can also be received in aacPlus format. In order to receive is a software MP3 player such as Clementine, Winamp, foobar2000, Amarok, Quicktime or VLC media player.
