Dioceses of Saint Thomas of Mylapore

The Diocese of São Tomé Meliapore (Latin: Sancti Thomae de Dioecesis Meliapor ) was from 1606 to 1952 and located in India Roman Catholic diocese. Seat was Mylapore, from the 16th to 18th centuries a Portuguese colony and now a suburb of Chennai (Madras ), the capital of the Indian state of Tamil Nadu.

History

The Diocese of São Tomé Meliapore was built on 9 January 1606 by Pope Paul V. from cessions of territory of the diocese of Cochin. On January 21, 1612, the diocese of São Tomé Meliapore parts of its territory was from establishing the Apostolic Administration of Mozambique. More cessions of territory were made in 1642 to the founding of the Apostolic Vicariate of Fort Saint George and the Apostolic Vicariate in 1741 establishing Ava and Pegu. On April 18, 1834, the Diocese of São Tomé Meliapore parts of its territory was from the foundation of the Apostolic Vicariate of Bengal. Another area assignment was in 1836 establishing the mission sui juris Madurai.

On April 24, 1838 Diocese of São Tomé Meliapore by Pope Gregory XVI was. resolved with the Papal Bull multa praeclare and the territory was annexed to the Vicariate Apostolic of Madras. The Diocese of São Tomé Meliapore was posted on September 1, 1886 by Pope Leo XIII. built with the Papal Bull Humanae salutis again. On November 13, 1952, the Diocese of São Tomé Meliapore was again dissolved and united with that resulting from the Apostolic Vicariate of Fort Saint George Archdiocese of Madras - Mylapore Madras to an archbishopric.

The Diocese of São Tomé Meliapore was the Archdiocese of Goa and Daman is a suffragan.
