Roman Catholic Diocese of Tiruchirapalli

The Diocese of Tiruchirappalli (Latin: Dioecesis Tiruchirapolitanus ) is a location in India Roman Catholic diocese based in Tiruchirappalli.

History

The Diocese of Tiruchirappalli was 1606 cession of territory of the diocese of Cochin sui juris Madurai Mission built, but already in 1773 lifted.

The Diocese of Tiruchirappalli was again in 1836 by Pope Gregory XVI. out of territory of the Diocese of São Tomé Meliapore as a mission sui juris Madurai built. On 19 May 1846, the mission was sui juris Madurai by Gregory XVI. elevated to the Apostolic Vicariate. The Apostolic Vicariate of Madurai on September 1, 1886, Pope Leo XIII. charged with the Apostolic Constitution Humanae salutis to the diocese.

On June 7, 1887 Diocese of Madurai was renamed Diocese of Trichinopoly and the Archdiocese of Bombay, is a suffragan. The Diocese of Trichinopoly was on June 12, 1923 from parts of its territory to the founding of the Diocese of Tuticorin. A further transfer of territory took place on January 8, 1938 establishing the bishopric of Madura. On 21 October 1950, the diocese was renamed the Diocese of Trichinopoly Tiruchirappalli. The Diocese of Tiruchirappalli was placed under the Archdiocese of Madurai suffragan on September 19, 1953. On 10 November 2003, the Diocese of Tiruchirappalli were parts of its territory from the foundation of the Diocese of Dindigul.

The diocese comprises the Tiruchirappalli located in the district of Tiruchirappalli Tiruchirappalli taluks and Manapparai, located in the district of Karur Taluk Kulithalai and the located in the district of Pudukkottai Taluk Kulathoor in the state of Tamil Nadu.
