Dito Shanidze

Dimitri Ivanovich " Ditto " Schanidse ( born February 8, 1937 in Disability ski, Imereti, Georgian SSR; † 18 November 2010) was a Soviet weightlifter Georgian origin. He won one silver medal in the featherweight at the Olympic Games in 1968 and 1972.

Career

Ditto Schanidse was initially Turner and came only at the age of 20 years for weight lifting. For this reason, the need for sports club Gantiadi Tbilisi -starting, 1.58 meter tall athlete, a relatively long time until he reached the Soviet and world leaders.

The first notable result he achieved at the age of 29, when he reached at the Soviet Championship 1966 featherweight 345 kg in the Olympic triathlon the 4th Place. In 1967, he rose at the Grand Prix of Tbilisi in the Olympic triathlon at 372.5 kg and he was in the featherweight Soviet runner-up in 1968, with 370 kg.

1968 Ditto Schanidse achieved at the Baltic Cup in Helsinki featherweight with 392.5 kg a new Soviet record and was then employed at the European Championships in Leningrad, where he could not reach but with 367.5 kg by far to this record and behind the Poland Mieczysław Nowak, who reached 380 kg, placed 2nd. There he presented on 12 April 1972 at the Olympic triathlon with 402.5 kg ( 127,5-120-155 ) set a new world record. At the European Championships in Constanţa, he won 395 kg ( 122,5-120-152,5 ) the title before Norair Nurikjan from Bulgaria, who scored 387.5 kg. At the Olympic Games in Munich, he then grew in the Olympic triathlon at 400 kg ( 127,5-120-152,5 ), but subject to the beyond itself monitored Norair Nurikjan who came to 402.5 kg and the world record was established. Ditto Schanidse thus won his second Olympic silver medal.

After the Olympic Games in 1972, the Press was abolished by the International Weightlifting Federation. The last race at an international championship graduated Ditto Schanidse at the European Championships 1974 in Verona. He scored there featherweight 272.5 kg ( 120 to 152.5 ) and had to be there at the same power due to the slightly heavier body weight the Bulgarian Georgi Todorov bend, but referred Nurikjan, who scored 265 kg on the 3rd place.
