Djiboutian presidential election, 2011

In the presidential elections in Djibouti, 2011, April 8, 2011 Ismail Omar Guelleh, President of Djibouti, the previous re-elected with 80 percent of the vote. His rival Mohamed Warsama Ragueh, a lawyer and former judge, on the other hand received 19 percent of the vote. However, the opposition coalitions in the country boycotted the election by pointing out that they were neither free nor fair. To ensure that only President Guelleh and Ragueh, who was 2005 President of the Constitutional Council of Djibouti were, to the vote. Also Ragueh complained of irregularities in the voting process.

In April 2010 the National Assembly of Djibouti had a constitutional amendment decided that allowed President Guelleh to run for a third term. Until then president of the country were limited to two terms. Inspired by the Arab Spring has become known as the protests in the Arab World 2010/2011 demonstrators had started from February 2011 to demand the removal of President Guelleh. On at least two occasions the government had subsequently arrested opposition leaders and allow detain several protesters.

Democracy International (DI ), a body financed by USAID organization that has been active since November 2011 in the country to monitor the elections, had been invited on 21 March by the government to leave the country after government officials who have questioned their impartiality. The African Union and the United States and France's embassies had sent some observers to monitor the elections, as well as several regional organizations.

Another potential candidate, businessman Abdourahman boreh, who lived in London in self-imposed exile, did not participate because Guelleh was on the ballot.

8 May 2011 Guelleh was sworn in for his third term in office.
