Dolder Grand

The Dolder Grand (formerly Dolder Grand Hotel) is a 5 -star hotel in Zurich -Hottingen that exists under the old name Dolder Grand Hotel at this location since 1899. It lies on the western slope of the Adlisbergs with views over the city and the lake basin of Lake Zurich.

The hotel offers 40,000 m² area of 173 rooms that cost (as of January 2012) between 540 and 14,000 francs per night. It is one of the Leading Hotels of the World.

The hotel features a wave pool and a 9- hole golf course. The hall of the hotel can accommodate a variety of events such as the Press Ball.

History

Waldhaus Dolder

The hotel's history began with Heinrich Hürlimann (1841-1910), a learned coopers, land speculator and innkeeper. After 1889 a local rebuilt in Zurich the largest beer garden, later on, " comedies and Flora Theatre " and finally demolished the existing building and the Schauspielhaus, he secretly bought at Zurich mountain above the town of cheap land together. He planned a lookout and Spa hotel, reachable with its own funicular, the Dolderbahn. This was inaugurated in the summer of 1893 and in the same month the restaurant " Waldhaus Dolder " was opened.

The Basel architect Jacques Gros (1858-1922) had a massive building on the mountain side in front with an ornate tower and turrets Holzblockbau. Tenant was Hürlimann itself. Waldhaus and mountain railways yielded so well that the joint-stock company founded by Hürlimann decided to continue building.

The Forest House was blown up in 1972. In its place, a new hotel structure was created until 1975. This should be from 2016 replaced by a modern building.

Dolder Grand Hotel

Architect Jacques Gros built in the then-popular Swiss wooden style a luxury hotel, the Waldhaus romance and claims pampered guests combined. 1899, the " Dolder Grand Hotel & Curhaus » was opened. The house offered 220 guests and equipped with telephone, telegraph, and shared bathrooms.

While art historians have described the house as " a prototype of kitsch ," was the " Dolder " quickly coveted address famous people, a meeting place for high society of Zurich and the scene of luxurious balls. Among the famous guests included Mohammad Reza Pahlavi, Haile Selassie, Albert Einstein, Yehudi Menuhin, Thomas Mann, Winston Churchill, Walt Disney, Sophia Loren and the Rolling Stones.

In the 1920s, the hotel from presented for seasonal to year-round operation. At the same time comprehensive extensions were created: The main building was extended by a staff wing and moved the main entrance from the front to the back of the house. On 3 April 2008, the renovated by Norman Foster Hotel was reopened. The renovations cost, according to the majority shareholder Urs Schwarzenbach 440 million francs. All after 1899 buildings have been removed, restored the historic main building and the facade was completely in the original state of 1899 is reset.
