Dolná Streda

Dolna Streda (up to 1927 Slovak " Dolna Streda nad Váhom " or " Považska Streda "; Hungarian Alsószerdahely - to 1907 Vágszerdahely ) is a city and a municipality in western Slovakia, with 1429 inhabitants ( 31 December 2011) and is located in Okres Galanta, an administrative unit within the Trnavský kraj.

Geography

Dolna Streda is located in the Slovak Danube lowland, more precisely in the Danube hills on the right bank of the Waag, near the town of Sered ( 3 km).

History

In the church today there are numerous archaeological finds, in addition to the older from the Stone, Bronze and Iron Age, there are also old Hungarian and Slavic tombs from the 10th and 11th centuries. The town itself was first mentioned in 1283 as Zerdahel writing. In 1312 it was burnt down by an army of the oligarchs Matthew Csák. Dolna Streda long time belonged to the estate of the Archdiocese of Gran In the 16th century it is mentioned as a market town with a right to hold a weekly market. In addition to agriculture, therefore, some crafts as well as rafting and fishing were well developed.

From 1971 to 1990 Dolna Streda was a district of Sered. 1965, a large nickel refinery was west of the town ( closed since 1992) built. Although they offered many jobs for the area, but left a problematic environmental biological estate, which today still has a toxic waste dump result.
