Dom Aleixo

Dom Aleixo is a sub-district, which forms the western part of the East Timorese capital Dili. The namesake of the subdistrict is the Timorese folk hero Dom Aleixo.

Geography

Dom Aleixo forms the western part of the district of Dili. To the east lies the sub-district of Veracruz, in the west of the district Liquiçá with the subdistrict Bazartete and southern touches Dom Aleixo with a peak district Aileu with the subdistrict Laulara. To the north is the Strait of Wetar. Here the Rio Comoro flows into the sea. However, the river is only during the rainy season water. Near the western boundary is the Tibarsee, one of the few larger lakes of East Timor. Three small salt lakes are next in Tasitolu that are fed in the rainy season from Mota Tasitolu. They are a designated Important Bird Area and as a peace park under special protection. Also in Tasitolu is a six -meter-high mono Mental statue of Pope John Paul II. The border with Veracruz in the northeast forms of Maloa. Between Maloa and Rio Comoro a third temporary river in Dom Aleixo flows into the sea.

The subdistrict is divided into four Sucos: Bairro Pite ( Bairo Pite ), Comoro, Fatuhada and Kampung Alor. All Sucos are classified as urban.

In Suco Comoro is the international Presidente Nicolau Lobato Airport and the Cultural Center of Arte Moris.

In Fatuhada the new headquarters of the defense forces of East Timor is established since October 2010.

Population

In Dom Aleixo 105 154 people live (2010, 2004: 71 489 ). The average age is 20.9 years ( 2010, 2004: 20.0 years ).

Even in urban Dili are managed by the inhabitants fields and gardens to supplement the livelihood. 8% of households in Dom Aleixo have coconut trees, 11 % build cassava, 8% vegetables, 10 % of corn and 2% even coffee. In addition, pets are kept as chickens and pigs.

History

Kampung Alor was formerly the district in which the population of Arab descent settled the end of the 19th century. These are descendants of the Yemeni tribe of the Kathiri from Hadramaut. In Kampung Alor is the Annur Mosque, the largest mosque in Dili.

On the grounds of the Peace Parks Tasitolu, Pope John Paul II on 12 October 1989, a trade fair. Here East Timor's independence was proclaimed on 20 May 2002.

The west of Dili was one of the focal points of the riots in East Timor in 2006. Again and again it came here to fights and other incidents.
