Domingo Ortiz de Rosas, 1st Marquis of Poblaciones

Domingo Ortiz de Rozas, Conde de Poblaciones ( born November 21, 1683 Rozas, Asturias, Spain, † June 28, 1756 at sea off Cape Horn ) was a Spanish officer and colonial administrator, who as governor of the Río de la Plata ( 1741 - 1746 ) and in Chile ( 1746-1755 ) officiated.

Origin and Youth

Ortiz was born the son of Urbano Ortiz de Rozas and his wife, Isabel García de Villasuso. He married Ana Felipa Ruiz de Bribiesca (also: Briviesca ) from Cadiz, with whom he had three sons and a daughter. His wife died in 1778.

At an early age he entered the service of the Spanish Crown and fought in the War of Spanish Succession in Italy and North Africa. In 1737 he was inducted as a knight in the Order of Santiago. He got in the army up to the rank of field marshal.

In 1747 he was raised to the Conde de Poblaciones.

Term as governor in Buenos Aires

On May 24, 1745 King Philip V appointed him captain-general of the province of Río de la Plata Viceroyalty of Peru, and he took residence in Buenos Aires, where he took up his duties on 25 March 1746. ( According to other sources, this should be done already on 21 June 1742. ) During his tenure, he oversaw the trade in the province of Sacramento and drove the fortification works in Montevideo ahead.

Term as governor in Chile

With royal deed dated May 24, In 1745 he was appointed Governor of Chile, where he took office on March 25, 1746.

He held with the indigenous Mapuche population from a parliament in which the Indians assurances regarding not to take any more raids across the Andes main ridge.

His tenure was the approval in 1747 and formal establishment of the Real Universidad de San Felipe and the appointment of its first rector, Tomás de Azua. The teaching, however, was added ten years later.

In 1749 was built on the Juan Fernandez Islands, a prison island. This should be after the defeat at the Battle of Rancagua live in exile in later years, many independence fighters.

Ortiz was set up in Santiago de Chile flood control on the Río Mapocho to 1751 new, after it had come to devastating floods in 1748, when the river had overflowed its banks. By deed dated September 17, 1754, King Ferdinand accepted the resignation of 71 -year-olds and appointed Manuel d' Amat i de Junyent his successor.

Death

On the return trip to Europe Ortiz was at the height of Cape Horn on June 28, 1756 during a winter storm overboard and drowned.
