Donald Steven

Donald Steven ( born May 26, 1945 in Montreal ) is a Canadian composer.

Steven spent several years active as a rock and folk musician, before he at McGill University ( 1968-72 ) and Milton Babbitt at Princeton University ( 1972-74 ) studied composition with Bruce Mather. From 1975 he taught composition at McGill University, where he was responsible for the modernization of the electronic music studio and setting up the studios for computer music. He was Dean of the Conservatory at Purchase College and founding dean of the College of Performing Arts at Roosevelt University in 1992. He then taught at the State University of New York and became Vice President for Academic Affairs at Rider University.

As early as 1970 Steven received the BMI Award for composition students. Two years later, the price of the Canadian Federation of University Women 's Creative Arts and 1987 was followed by the Juno Award in the category "Best Classical Composition" for Pages of Solitary Delights. In 1991 he won with In the Land of Pure Delight the Jules Léger Prize.

Stevens has received commissions from musicians such as Maureen Forrester, Tsuyoshi Tsutsumi, Bertram Turetsky, Robert Riseling and Alvaro Pierri, by the Société de musique contemporaine du Québec, the Pierrot Ensemble, the Canadian Electronic Ensemble, the New Music Concerts and the CBC.
