The Expressway 65 ( Kor. 동해 고속도로 ) is an expressway in South Korea. The road runs along the east coast of South Korea and currently consists of two parts, a part from Busan to Ulsan and a slightly more northerly part which forms the ring road of Gangneung. Both parts together are around 132 kilometers long. It is planned to connect the two parts of the highway together.

Street Description

Busan - Ulsan

The highway begins at the east side of Busan, where connects the south coast with the east coast. The highway runs along the mountainous coast here in the north, not more than a few kilometers away from the sea in general. Along the coast are only a few small towns. The highway then passes west of the industrial city of Ulsan along. The highway ends at the interchange with the Expressway 16

Gangneung

The second part of the highway begins in the coastal town of Donghae, about 220 kilometers north of Ulsan. The highway here runs almost directly on the beach and then take off and runs a little further inland through some tunnels. The mountains are over 1,000 meters high here. The highway then passes west of Gangneung, one of the largest cities in the northeast of South Korea with 230,000 inhabitants. On the northwest side of the city ends of Expressway 50 The highway ends in Yangyang, about 50 kilometers south of the border with North Korea.

History

The history of Expressway 65 goes pretty far back for South Korean concepts. On 26 March 1974, construction began on between Donghae and Gangneung and this section of the motorway was opened with one lane on 14 October 1975. In 1999, construction began on the expansion of this piece to 2x2 lanes, which was completed in 2004. There were several new tunnel for this project. All highways in the northeast of South Korea were built with a roadway. On 4 November 2001, the construction of the section between Busan and Ulsan began. This section was released on 29 December 2008 for traffic. On 27 November 2009, the portion of Gangneung opened after Hajodae.

Future

Concrete plans for the entire construction of the line does not exist, but since June 2009, is a part of Ulsan Pohang in construction. This part is about 50 kilometers long and is to be completed in August 2014. Since March 2009, is an extension of Yang Yang ( Hajodae ) to Sokcho in construction. This section is to be completed in 2015. Sokcho is located about 35 kilometers south of the border with North Korea.
