Donna Shalala

Donna Edna Shalala ( born February 14, 1941 in Cleveland, Ohio) is an American politician of the Democratic Party, and high school teacher.

Biography

Shalala served between 1962 and 1964 as one of the first volunteers of the Peace Corps in Iran. From 1977 to 1980 she was responsible for policy research and development in the Ministry of Housing during the administration of U.S. President Jimmy Carter as an assistant to Patricia Roberts Harris.

Following them was in 1980 at the age of 39 years, President of Hunter College, part of the City University of New York. During the tenure there, she gained a reputation as a feminist in promoting the strengthening of women and minorities on the faculties and the university administration. In 1988, she became Chancellor ( Chancellor ) of the University of Wisconsin -Madison and as such, the first woman to head one of the so-called Big Ten universities. As Chancellor, she introduced the " Madison " plan to combat racism at the university.

On January 22, 1993, U.S. President Bill Clinton appointed her as Minister of Health ( Secretary of Health and Human Services ) in his cabinet. While the debate about the introduction of a general health insurance before the U.S. Congress in 1994, it began with such a leading role, although supported by the then First Lady Hillary Clinton campaign was ultimately unsuccessful. Shalala helped in the subsequent period in the organization of children's health insurance program ( Children's Health Insurance Programs ), which offered the insurance of more than 2.5 million children. In addition, it was the basis of race involved in the elimination of disparities in health care as well as in programs to reduce violence against women and the improvement of medication in AIDS. Many of their actions were working together with private organizations to improve the health of children and young adults, particularly in the enforcement of smoking bans. She left at the end of the tenure of Bill Clinton on January 20, 2001, the government, and was eight years in office the longest reigning Minister of Health of the United States.
