Douglas Rodríguez (boxer)

Douglas Rodríguez Gardiola ( born June 3, 1950 in Santiago de Cuba, † 21 May, 2012 Havana ) was a Cuban boxer.

In 1970 Rodríguez flyweight (-51 kg), the Central American and Caribbean Championships in Havana. At the Pan American Games in 1971 he won a bronze medal behind Francisco Rodríguez, Venezuela, and Arturo Delgado, Mexico. The following year he competed in the Olympic Games in Munich. After victories over Jorge Mejia, Ecuador (5-0 ), Fujio Nagai, Japan (5-0 ), Constantin Gruiescu, Romania ( 3:2 ), and Boris Zoriktuyev, Soviet Union ( TKO 3 ), Rodríguez reached the semifinals. In this Leo Rwabwogo him was from Uganda against whom he defeated 3-2 judges vote and was eliminated with a bronze medal from the tournament.

1973 won the Silver Medal of the Rodríguez Central American and Caribbean Championships in Mexico City. In the final he defeated Alfredo Perez, Venezuela. At the World Championships in 1974 in Havana, he was able to return the favor in the final at Perez ( 4-1 ) and became world champion.

21 May 2012 Rodríguez died at the age of 61 years to a heart attack.
