Dover, Tasmania

Dover is a small town in the southeast of the Australian state of Tasmania. It is located south of Geeveston on the Esperance Bay and is the most southwesterly city in the Local Government Area Huon Valley Municipality. The Huon Highway ( A6) connects with Dover Hobart.

The number of inhabitants was found in the 2006 census to 958 .. Of these 91 % were born in Australia, 5 % in the UK and 1% in New Zealand, Germany and Greece.

History

In 1892, Bruni D' Entrecasteaux reached the discoverer of the south of Tasmania after his ships were blown off course due to unfavorable winds. D' Entrecasteaux and his crew spent several weeks in the Recherche Bay and repaired their ships. During this time she charted Port Esperence, now Dover, and named after one of the expedition ships.

After the colonization of Tasmania a convict camp was established at Dover. Today, the only visible evidence of this period, the Commandant 's Office, the Office of the Commandant.

From the 1850s, Dover grew as a logging town, from here the Huon Pine was shipped all over the world. Today, the town lives mainly of the fishing industry and fruit growing.
