DR Class 22

The steam locomotives of Class 22 were converted passenger locomotives of the Deutsche Reichsbahn.

They originated 1958-1962 within the reconstruction program of the locomotives of the series 39.0-2. This had two major problems: the boiler produced too little steam, and the steam roads were winding, which greatly limited the maximum power of the locomotive. A total of 85 specimens have been equipped with a new combustion chamber boiler with Mischvorwärmeranlage the type IfS. To accommodate the new steam generator, the frame had to be extended. Due to the wider rear boiler the cab received a revised front wall. The locomotives carried the car numbers 22001-085 and were mainly located in the Reichsbahn divisions of Dresden and Erfurt. The German Reichsbahn continued the locomotives in heavy express train service in the plans of the Series 01, which, however, led to an overload of the original components and thus to frame cracks and piston damage. The early retirement of locomotives was the result. 1968 were used for the reconstruction of the Series 03 50 of 85 Rekokessel Series 22.

In 1970, the remaining locomotives were assigned to the new computer just numbering scheme of the series 39.10. However, in 1970 only a few machines in Halberstadt and Saalfeld were in use. Already in 1971, the last locomotive was turned off. Until the early 1990s, served as a steam locomotives nine donors.

The vehicles were equipped with a Tender senders of types 2'2 'T 32 or 2'2 ' T 34.
