DR Class 58.30

The DR series 58.30 is a freight locomotive of the Deutsche Reichsbahn in the GDR, which was created as part of the so-called reconstruction program of locomotives of Class G 12 (Series 58.2-5, 10-21 ). Were between 1958 and 1962 to the former Reichsbahn repair shop ( Raw) Zwickau 56 locomotives of different origin railways (including some former Alsatian locomotives) rebuilt.

History

The reason for the partial reconstruction of the new equal upcoming G 12 was an occurred at the beginning of the 1950s, lack of powerful freight locomotives with 15 t to 18 t axle load for the central mountain ranges in the GDR. The intended in and of itself build a 42 derived from the war locomotive new locomotive type by the locomotive industry in the GDR could not be implemented due to lack of steel allocation by the State Planning Commission. A instead of Škoda award construction contract for 80 aircraft to the Czech series 556.0 has not been fulfilled by the contractor. Ultimately, therefore, it was decided to reconstruct the machine G 12 Series Due to the partly already advanced wear of the G 12, in particular with respect to the boiler, medium cylinder and the Kropfachswellen, resulted in this anyway a basic repair needs.

As part of the reconstruction of the machine completely newly manufactured, welded cabs, the newly developed Rekokessel with combustion chamber, Mischvorwärmeranlagen new medium cylinder welded construction, Trofimoff slider and skirting the so-called type Witte received. The built Rekokessel 58E is an acquired with minor modifications 50E boiler, which was installed among other things, at the Reko locomotives 50.35 and 52.80 as well as the DR- series Neubaulok 23:10. Because of the longer boiler, it was necessary to extend the bar frame, this front sheet metal frame piece was vorgeschuht. The distance between the wheelset and the first Kuppelradsatz enlarged by 300 mm and thus the overall wheelbase of the locomotive from 8500 to 8800 mm. Among other things, why the speed limit of 65 km / h to 70 km / h could be increased. In addition, a pronounced weakness of the old G 12, namely due to its multipartite complex and wear-prone, detached from the slide cross heads of the external control control drive for the middle cylinder was removed. We replaced it with a set on the left Lokseite on the fifth Kuppelradsatz countercrank that ( on the left Lokseite ) and a shaft drive on a second swing rod, the inner rocker.

After the reconstruction, the 58.30 was a completely new, striking face with her new cab, the high center of the boiler, the smoke chamber steep apron and the two main air tanks located above the cylinder. The reconstructed locomotive was compared with their original machine G 12 powerful, more economical and faster. The G 12 Series used on a ride on the boiler limit 2.72 tons of coal per hour, 58.30, despite the higher power is only 2.2 tonnes. You could in-plane tensile load of 2,400 tonnes at 50 km / h drag, whereas the origin of the machine at the same speed only 1,810 t managed (for firing with brown coal). In the lowlands, the Reko - G12 thus reaching the level of performance of the DR- 44 series, which in the plane also 2,400 t with 50 km / h mastered. On uphill stretches, the series was 44, however, the 58.30, not least because of the continued performance versus larger friction mass.

However, the 58.30 was also the most expensive locomotive of the entire reconstruction program because of their elaborate modernization. Reconstruction costs amounted including the 95,000 Mark expensive new tender to a total of 434,000 marks (for comparison had a Neubaulok Series 50.40 an estimated price of 466,000 marks).

Since the supply of new tenders for various reasons, to the extent necessary was not possible and the original tender pr 3 T 20 / T 21 sa 3 could not be used for reasons of driving safety, reigned for this series a long time of great shortage tender. Thus, the 58.30 was initially coupled with almost all available forms four-axle Tender. There are photographs from the operational service with the great unity Tender 2'2'T 34 as well as with the Wannentender 2'2'T 30

The system established with the reconstruction greater performance was gratefully accepted and used in the operation. It was also found that the still largely derived from the original machine engine and the frame were not designed for such a high continuous load, so that the machine required a higher than average maintenance costs. As early as 1976, therefore, were allowed on the machines basically only outlet repairs ( malware group L5 ) are carried out.

The rebuilt locomotives were mainly in Saxony and Thuringia, including the railway depots Aue, chubs, Dresden -Friedrichstadt, Gera, Gotha and Saalfeld, home. The last units were stationed in Glauchau. On February 12, 1981 Glauchau, 58 3028 and 58 3032 parked and thus ended the official use of the steam locomotives of the series 58.30 Bw.

Two locomotives ( Prussian origin) have been preserved as a non-operative specimens for posterity. The 1961 from 58 in 1955 ( ERFURT 5672 ), ( LHB Breslau 1920) reconstructed 58 3047 is now cared for by the same community of interest in Glauchau and the club Saxon railway enthusiasts hosts and maintains in Schwarzenberg consisting of 58 1725 ( COLOGNE 5617 ), ( Hanover Engineering AG Hannover 1920) created 58 3049th former museum locomotive is coupled with a new tender 2'2'T 28, the latter with a 2'2'T 32 Tender remodeling of the genus Prussian P 10
