Dubbo

Dubbo is a city in the Australian state of New South Wales and is located on the Macquarie River about 400 km north- west of Sydney. The central location is a crossroads of important north -south and east-west connections of New South Wales.

Dubbo was established in 1849 and today has 30 574 inhabitants. The name comes from the Wiradjuri Aborigines who named the area " Tubbo ", "red earth ".

The city is one of the four main sites of the Charles Sturt University. Biggest tourist attraction is the Dubbo Western Plains Zoo, the largest open-air enclosure of Australia. More than a thousand animals are there on 300 ha, in addition to the native species including Bengal and White Tigers.

Dubbo has a small airport and is the main intersection of important roads and railway lines. A railway track to Newcastle, two lead to Orange and from there to Sydney to Cobar and Bourke one and another after Coonamble.

Famous son of the town is the cricketer Glenn McGrath.

Wilcannia is the center and the administrative seat of the local administrative area Dubbo City.
