Duke of Braganza

Dukes of Braganza ( Bragança portug. ), city in northern Portugal.

During the period in which the House of Braganza and the House of Saxe -Coburg -Gotha to the Portuguese throne inside had (1640-1910) held the title of Duke of Braganza, the respective Portuguese throne. 1836 was awarded the title as Prince Consort at the wedding of Ferdinand II (Portugal ) before it later became the titular king.

Peter IV ( = Emperor Pedro I of Brazil) took after his abdication as Emperor of Brazil in 1831 the title of Duke of Braganza again, which he led until his death in 1834.

The head of the legitimist line of the House of Braganza, ie the descendants of the exiled King Michael I, also bore the title of Duke of Braganza, which until 1921 was not accepted by both of the Portuguese kings:

  • Michael Maria Carlos (1853-1927), Duke of Braganza, son of King Michael of Portugal and Princess Adelaide of Löwenstein -Wertheim -Rosenberg. 1877 Marries Elizabeth of Thurn and Taxis in 1893 Marie Therese, Princess of Löwenstein -Wertheim -Rosenberg
  • Nuno Duarte (1907-1976), Duke of Braganza, son of Duke Michael of Braganza and Princess Marie Therese. 1942 Marries Maria Francisca of Orleans and Braganza, Princess of Brazil, a great-granddaughter of Emperor Peter II of Brazil. He is widely recognized in 1921 by the exiled last Portuguese King Manuel II as his successor, and thus head of the House of Braganza.
  • Duarte Pio ( b. 1945 ), Duke of Braganza, the current head of the House of Braganza, in 1995 he married Isabel Inês de Castro Curvelo de Heredia.
