Dunbeg

Dunbeg (Gaelic: An Dùn Beag ) is a small village in the northwest of the unitary authority Argyll and Bute. It lies on the southern shore of sea inlet of Loch Linnhe, near the junction of Loch Etive about four kilometers northeast of Oban and 46 kilometers southwest of Fort William

History

Near Dunbeg located with the Dunstaffnage Castle since the 13th century, a castle of the Clan MacDougall. Robert the Bruce conquered the ruins early 14th century and it remained henceforth in the possession of the Scottish kings. The building now preserved as a ruin is classified in the highest category A Scottish monument. With the associated church buildings Dunstaffnage Chapel is a second building category A in Dunbeg. The village then developed in the 1950s with the establishment of the Dunstaffnage Marine Laboratory. In the year 2001 730 inhabitants were counted in Dunbeg.
