Dursley

Dursley is a municipality in the county of Gloucestershire in England. The village lies at the foot of the northeast flank of Stinchcombe Hill, part of the chain of hills of the Cotswolds, about 6 km south-east of the River Severn. Dursley shares many facilities with the adjacent municipality Cam (combined population about 12,000 ).

Durlsey is on the edge of the Cotswolds, the drop at this point against the Severn Vale and the River Severn. The place is located in a rural setting by the river Cam. The long distance footpath Cotswold Way passes through Dursley.

History

The area of Dursley has been inhabited since the Neolithic period. In Uley Bury the nearby village of Uley remains of an Iron Age fort, which dates to approximately 300 BC exist. Roman ruins can be found in the neighboring towns Frocester, Woodchester and Calcot Manor.

Built in 1153 by Roger de Berkeley in Dursley a castle, which, however, is not obtained. The Church of St. James the Great originated in the 13th century, the building was visible today, however, created mainly in the 14th and 15th centuries. The original steeple collapsed in January 1699 at the ringing of the bells, which had some deaths resulted. The present tower dates from 1709 and was built by Thomas Sumsion.

Dursley was in the 18th century an important market town, the farmers and traders attracted from further afield. The ornamented with columns market house with a statue of Queen Anne dated from 1738.

1856 Dursley was connected via the Dursley and Midland Junction Railway to the rail network. The station was on a branch line of the railway line Bristol - Gloucester. This port was shut down in 1968. In 1994, a new station was opened at the site of the former branch.

Dursley gained in 1471 the Borough status, but those lost in 1886. From 1886 to 1974 it was the center of the constituency Dursley Rural District. 1974 Dursley was incorporated in the electoral district of Stroud.
