Earl Bathurst
Earl Bathurst, of Bathurst in the County of Sussex, is a British hereditary title of nobility in the Peerage of Great Britain, which is supported by the family Bathurst.
Ancestral home of the family is Cirencester House at Cirencester in Gloucestershire.
Award
The title was for Allen Bathurst, 1st Baron Bathurst, created in 1772. This was a politician of his time and was in opposition to Sir Robert Walpole. He was also a patron of many important writers and poets such as Alexander Pope and Jonathan Swift. At his headquarters, he had to create a significant landscape garden.
Subordinate title
The first Earl Bathurst had been in the County of Bedford, where already in 1712, that sixty years before his elevation to the Earl, Baron Bathurst, of Battlesden.
The second Earl should 1771 be the lifetime of his father, Lord Chancellor. To this end, he was in the County of Sussex, raised to Baron Apsley, of Apsley. On the death of the first Earl the barony became the subordinate title of the earldom. This title will now run as the courtesy title of each title heirs.
Both baronies are also included in the Peerage of Great Britain.
