East Wallabi Island

East Wallabi Iceland is located in the Indian Ocean 88 km north-west coast of Western Australia Geraldton city. The 3.27 km ² large island is the second largest of the Houtman Abrolhos Archipelago - and, with the 15 m high Flag Hill the highest point in the entire archipelago.

The name Wallabi goes to a genus of small kangaroos, wallabies, back, are to be found there sporadically.

Geography

The island is located in the center of Wallabi Islands, 20 km southeast of North Iceland and about 2 km northeast of West Wallabi Iceland, the largest island in the Houtman Abrolhos -. It is surrounded to the south-west by a thick, lying just below the sea level coral reef, so that the neighboring island of West Wallabi can be achieved at normal water level on foot.

History

The islands of East and West Wallabi Wallabi acquired historic significance in connection with the 1629 stranded in the Morning Reef Wallabi Islands Dutch merchant ship Batavia. While some of the survivors instigated a bloody mutiny on the 7 km southeast, Beacon Iceland, located 40 captain loyal officers could entrench on West Wallabi. There and on East Iceland Wallabi time there was enough fresh water (from rain water cisterns ) and abundant food sources.

Use

East Wallabi is uninhabited. To the east of the island, however, a 650 m long is fortified sand track for small aircraft (28 ° 26 ' 13 " S, 113 ° 44' 7" E - 28.436883333333113.735225 ).

East Wallabi Iceland may be entered for the protection of fauna and flora only with special permission today.
