The Échezeaux is classified as grand cru vineyard in the Côte -d'Or in the Burgundy region in France. It is located in the town of Flagey -Echezeaux, has an area of 37.69 hectares and its own appellation. Produced exclusively red wine.

Location, climate and soil

The Échezeaux is on a slightly rising in the east slope from 230 to 300 m above sea level. In the north and east it borders the vineyard Musigny, northeast to include the prime locations Clos de Vougeot Grand and Échezeaux and to the south is the Premier Cru Les Suchots. The southeast region's vineyards are sold as a simple village wines under the name Vosne -Romanée. The vineyard is made up of the districts En Orveaux ( 9.72 hectares, only partially ), Les Treux (4.89 ha), Clos Saint- Denis (1.80 ha), Les Vignes Blanches Cruots ou (3.28 ha ), Les Rouges du Bas (3.99 ha), Les Champs Traversins (3.28 ha), Les Poulaillières ( 5.21 ha), Les Loachausses (3.75 ha), Les Nuits de Quartier (2, 58 ha) and Les Échezeaux du Dessus (3.55 ha) together. It consists of a large number of parcels that share almost 84 owners. The largest shares have the domains Domaine de la Romanee -Conti (4.67 ha), Mongeard - Mugneret (2.50 ha) and Emmanuel Rouget (1.43 ha).

The climate is associated with the Burgundian transitional climate, outweigh the continental influences over maritime. The mostly dry and hot summer, let the Pinot Noir to ripen though, great vintages emerge only when there is no rain in the fall affects the reading. Due to the pure east facing the micro-climate is relatively cool but very sunny. Situated right between the cuts of the Combe d' Orveaux and the Combe de Concoeur, the Échezeaux is being protected from nocturnal fall winds and late frosts.

The higher part of the Échezeaux rests on a Oolithsockel from the Bathonian. The underbody of the deeper part of the document is on Comblanchien limestone. The brown, clayey - calcareous soil layer of Échezeaux is in the upper part significantly thinner than in the lower. Therefore, the winegrowers of time must increase transport of eroded soil back to time. The numerous limestone store the heat of the day and radiate it at night back to the vines from.

Wine

The Échezeaux is generally produced exclusively from Pinot Noir. As another Pinot and Pinot Liébault Beurot are allowed. Theoretically, up to 15 % white grapes ( Chardonnay, Pinot Gris and Pinot Blanc) are used. The natural alcohol content must be at least 11.5 percent by volume. The Chaptalisation is - as everywhere in Burgundy - allowed. The base yield is 35 hectoliters per hectare per year, may be exceeded by a maximum of 20%. From 2003 to 2007 1 151 hectoliters per year were produced from this vineyard in the middle. These are 30.5 hl / ha. This provides this Grand Cru good 153,500 bottles per year.

The wine is, according to Clive Coates as a Grand Cru second class, which is lacking in finesse and concentration. The large number of producers, however, has a variety of musical styles and levels of quality result.
